What Does the following kidney Ultrasound Indicate?

Hello, my father aged 58 years went through stomach ultrasound and his report suggested the following: Left kidney showed middle calyx tiny 3mm echogenic stone casting no posterior shadowing. What is the best treatment available for this and what could be the reason for development of this stone. He is on regular medication for hypertension and uric acid.

Hi-

Great question. In general, renal stones (nephrolithiasis) smaller than 5 mm tend to pass on their own with increased fluids, analgesics, and possibly additional intervention such as an alpha-blocker (Flomax) and typically opioids. His uric acid medication, which is likely a uricosuric, causes uric acid to be peed out, which is why the stone might be a uric acid stone. In general, the stone may take around 3-14 days to pass.

Sincerely,

Brian, MPAS, PA-C
